computer freezes and will not restart for a while

Recently I've been having trouble with my computer locking up. Everything
freezes and nothing works. I turn it off manually and when I try to restart
the caps lock light will blink (Dell D600 laptop) but nothing loads and
nothing comes up on the screen. It will then just turn itself off. If I let
it sit for a bit it will restart but will eventually lock up again. I tried
to do a complete reformatting of my harddrive thinking it might cure the
problem. I wiped the harddrive clean and when trying to reformat it locks up
again! I tried to turn it back on and the same blinking light happened.
Does anyone know what to do to fix this? I'm beginning to think that there
is a permantent problem with my harddrive and I might need to get a new one
but would like to make sure. Thanks for any help.

This does sound like a hardware issue rather than software, and that your
harddrive is afiling. I would suggest contacting Dell for some hardware
support.
It is locking before it has had chance to start the windows software, which
does suggest hardware rather than software.
