Windows XP will not shut down.

Upon exit (start|turn off|turn off), windows xp pro hangs in the
"windows is shutting down" window. Harddrive grinds away for a while
(normal), and makes the typical "clink" sound as if it is shutting
down/turning off, but then nothing. HDD is quiet, but the shut down
screen remains. To turn off, I hold down the power button switch and it
goes off. Upon reboot, no errors reported. Startup is normal. For
start|turn off| restart computer restarts.
Any ideas?
