Computer Freezes after 10 Minutes or so of use

I have a Emachines T100 that is freezing about 10 minutes after signon. The
computer's power button doesn't work when frozen and I must (A) unplug the
powersupply or (B) turn off the surge protector.

I recently installed a new network card, a Mach Speed Gigabit card and it
worked fine for the first week. After that it started this freezing. This
had happened before with the old network card I had installed which the
reason for it not working was because there wasn't an XP driver for it.
After uninstalling that old network card it all worked until a couple days
after. I did a clean install of windows and it worked. So I got this new
one and got all the right drivers and installed.

I have Ad-aware and BHO Demon and Spybot running on the machine and all seem
to be working fine. No virus scan programs on the machine but that doesn't
seem to be the problem.

How do I get the computer to stop freezing up and start working right again?

Perhaps it is getting too hot. You could try getting rid of dirt, dust,
etc. inside the computer. Also, make certain that all fans are working.

The logical conclusion is a power supply problem. Unless someone
has a better suggestion you need a small computer repairer. That is
unless you just happen to have a spare power supply unit just waiting to
be installed. Of course it could be the switch and not the unit.

The freeze may not be related to the power supply.

To the Original Poster,

When you say the 'power button doesn't work' do you hold it in for 5 -
15 seconds? Try that.

Well I replaced the powersupply after it reached the point that CPU fan
didn't turn on, just the PS fan. I havn't tested he computer yet to see if
I can get past the ten minute freezing mark, but will try on Saturday. Any
other comments on the problem with the freezing or do you think it's the
power supply that was causing the problem. I have hypothezied the power
supply was causing the problem. Thanks

The CPU fan is vital to the cooling system. Irreparable damage can
be done if it fails to run for any period of time. It can lead to the
failure
of the motherboard, which makes for an expensive repair. Let's hope
this has not happened.

You can only test and observe.

Computer seems to be up and working. It hasn't frozen up yet *knock on
wood*. Thanks for all your help. I cleaned out the CPU fan and it's working
now with the new PS. The problem did lie in the Powersupply, unlike the
Emachines people who claimed it was in the Windows XP OS files. Thanks for
your help.
