Computer Freeze

F

Fernando Rojas

I have a Pavilion HP 8750C, Intel Pentium III. This
computer is about two and half years old. It came with
windows 98.

I use AOL to get on the internet. About six months ago,
my computer will freeze on my at different times, after
signing in to get on the internet.

As time went by the problem got worse. Many times I
called AOL for techical support and instructions were
given to correct the problem, but it has not solved it.

Someone adviced me to install Windows XP to correct the
freezing problem. I installed Windows XP about three
months ago. My computer has 192 MB of RAM.

The freezing problem got worse. Sometimes as soon as I
sign in on AOL, immediately my computer will freeze. I
have to turn it off about 3 to 4 times before I can do
anything, but few minutes later after navigating on any
site, it freezes again.

This problem is frustrating me very much. I will
appreciate very much if anyone can tell me of what to do
to fix this problem.

Thank you

In the years since you bought your PC, video on the Net has placed
increasing demands on the video card. Freezing may be a sign that it is
no longer up to the task...

You might try an updated video driver, from the chip or card
manufacturer's WEBsite. If results are poor, ROLL BACK to the prior
driver. If you are unfamiliar with this process, enlist the help fo
someone who is.

Another video card may also be worth testing.

While this may not help (generally anything associated with AOL is
probably their software), it *may* be something that is easy to fix if
it *is* the problem. Freezes are quite often a result of the mouse
driver and the video driver arguing over which controls the pointer. It
is easy to check on - Control Panel - Display - Settings, Click
Advanced, and on the Troubleshoot page reduce the acceleration slider
one notch or two. If one does it, there is negligible loss of
performance: if two are needed look for updated video drivers from the
maker's site.
