Computer Crashes when attempting to run MS Works

When I run Microsoft Works, my computer crashes with a
fatal error. I get a blue screen, stating something to
the effect that it was caused by "ppbint.dll" with a
bunch of numbers for the address. My computer reboots
too fast for me read the complete message.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this and how to fix it??

you have a visioneer scanner ??? They may have a up-date
to paper port.

Don't have visioneer scanner, but do have an HP Scanner
that uses paper port.
