Hello Amanda,

You most likely have some type of phone recording, answering or fax software
installed on the system. You would need to find and disable that software to
get it to stop trying to answer the phone. These will most likely be shown
in the notification area (icons in the lower right corner). Hold your mouse
pointer over the icons and you should see a tool tip showing what the icon
is. Right click on the icon and you should have some options.

Hope this helps

Thank You

Go into your BIOS setup and turn off the "Wake on Modem" setting
(and any other "Wake on ..." settings.

And how does this software know the phone is ringing if the computer isn't
running?

Just because you shut down Windows from the start button, or even
press the power switch on the front of the case, doesn't turn your
computer off. Parts of it are always receiving power from the power
supply unless you physically interrupt power from the wall socket to
the power supply by pulling the cord out or switching off a surge
supressor device.

Your situation has nothing to do with software on the hard drive.
It's a routine hard-coded into firmware on your BIOS, which is always
listening for a LAN signal or phone ring. When it gets that signal,
it switches the system back to full power - unless you turn that BIOS
feature off in CMOS.

DUH! It's the fact that the computer's BIOS is set to "Wake on ring."

Sure hope you're not in technical support.
