commpressed files appear empty!

Misschiff

I use various programs with built-in compression
capabilities. Many times Win XP compression utility
cannnot "see" the files within the zip file.... the zip
file appears empty. It seems the only utility that will
work is Winzip 9.x or higher.

Why is it Windows cant see the files, and what if
anything can I do about it?

I have searched hogh and low on the internet for
information regarding "empty zip files" (that are not
actually empty) and as to WHY this is happening. I have
read that others are having this problem... maybe some
relationship to java programs that have built-in
compression capabilities. Other programs I use are not
Java.

Any help or comments?
Thx :)

I believe that the latest version of WinZip is somehow different than
previously. Maybe it is now no longer compatible? I am sure that others who
use the latest WinZip will pop in here to correct me if I am wrong (-:
