command promt shows up, then closes

I have Windows XP and its an Emachines computer package. Im trying t
run Fortran 95 but when the command prompt screen shows up, it get
closed immediately. This used to happen to my task manager also. It
almost like its built in so that the user cant mess with things...

Are you saying that when you do Start>Run>cmd [enter] the command prompt
window opens and closes quickly? Are you also saying that when you
start Task Manager it opens and closes quickly? If I understand this
correctly, then your computer is most probably infected as these are
classic symptoms of a virus.

I downloaded Fortran95 which uses a command screen. when I try to ope
the command screen for Fortran95 it instantly closes. I just tried th
Start>run>cmd and that works fine....

Try using the Command Prompt >>Start>>Accessories>>Command Prompt...

That's not going to be any different than Start>run>cmd, it's just a
shortcut to cmd.exe.
