Codecs for playing video in powerpoint

I used to be able to successfully insert MPEG movies in powerpoint 2000, but
now I can't and I keep getting a message that says "Powerpoint can't insert a
movie from the selected file. Either the file is non-standard or, Quicktime
is not installed properly." Even movies that could be inserted and played
successfully a few months ago cannot be inserted now. These movies can be
played in Quicktime and Windows media player, but cannot be played when I run
mplay32.exe. According to the
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm website, I
believe I am missing the ivf Codec for MPEGVideo2. I have tried downloading
the Nimo Codecs from his website, but I'm really not sure how to get this
installed on my computer. According to the readme file, I should run
Nimo.exe, but this file cannot be found. I've tried downloading several times
with no luck. Please help!

Several points here.

Are you talking about Mpeg-1 or Mpeg-2? They are completely different. If
they are Mpeg-2 you MUST buy the codec as it does not come with Windows or
Office. (Mpeg-2 is also the codec used for DVD playback.)

Next, if you installed QuickTime it in all likelyhood hijacked the file
associations and altered your registry settings (WInXP) or changed the
system *.ini files. (Win9X)

If you can give us your version of WIndows and PowerPoint it would be a real
help.

I am using Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office XP Professional (the
powerpoint copyright year is 2002). When I view the properties of my videos,
it just says "mpeg". According to your info about Mpeg-2, I wouldn't think
they are MPEG-2 videos, because I was able to play them in powerpoint just a
couple of months ago with no problem.

Quicktime has been on my computer for quite some time and was not recently
installed, however, it is possible I updated it fairly recently, but I can't
remember. When I first got the error message in powerpoint when I tried to
insert a video the other day, I uninstalled Quicktime and re-installed it,
but this did not solve the problem.

Thanks.

You might want to take a look at PFCMedia, it should resolve these sorts of
issues automatically. You can download a fully functioning free trail from

When you double click the file to open it, what program opens it?
