C'mon experts help me out here

I cannot use a java private message window in java chat, why is that? I am
using ie6 with sp1, I have both MS VM and sun java, I have tried both but I
cannot get it to work.
I can view a chat but not open a pm window, sorry that is not quite true, I
can open a pm window but it is blank. Do I have my settings wrong or
something?
