Can't download MSN Chat software with XP Pro

I can't download msn chat software with my new Win XP Pro
comp. The smiley face never shows up.

Downloaded java sun, MS virtual machine and the updates,
tried several different configurations in 'internet
options' including enabling all java and MS virtual
machine options, with reboots in between. Checked my java
proxy settings. Deleted cookies and temp files. Java
works in the test pages I visited. Relaxed my privacy and
security settings. No help from Microsoft. Not on a
network yet.

When the popup dialog box appears, it says the chat
software is not signed, shouldn't it be? I even went to
the page listed in the popup box and downloaded it
directly, it seems to have loaded, but I still can't open
any chatroom window.
What options should be enabled? Or what settings?
Thank You

Has anyone had any luck with this yet? I recently purchased a new pc with xp home installed. everything else seems to run ok, but i cannot even get to 'see the smiley face', let alone having to say yes to accept the software. I also removed my firewall, as well as the one provided in xp, changed all of my security settings to low, deleted cookies, etc, and even after 3 reboots, when i get to the page telling me that they are now downloading chat software (should take 2 minutes), i have stayed on that page for over an hour waiting fro something to happen, and still no go. I have also enabled the java machine option in tools, options, but have run out of ideas. Does anyone have any clues?

It sounds to me like you don't have Java installed on your system.
Unless you specifically downloaded it, you don't. In any case, try
installing Java from here:

Still no luck. I have downloaded java from the site you recommended, no problems. I have enabled all java options from tools, internet options, advanced, and have been able to use the java program on it's own. Still no joy. Several reboots later, and when i go to a chat page, i still wait forever at the 'We are now downloading NineMSN Chat software' page, but the 'Smiley Face' never appears. I have also checked in 'Downloaded Program Files' and there is nothing in that folder. Any further clues?
