XP Pro, no virtual machine, chat?

Here is my original question to the chat newsgroup:

Hah! a chat question at last! I have been getting the
dialog box that says "Do you want to
download "http://chat.msn.com/bin/msnchat45.cab" it is
unsigned ... don't know who the author is ... could be
unsafe ..." ok so i'm paraphrasing here, but you got the
message. I tell it yes, nothing happens. went and relaxed
my settings to enable download of unsigned, again,
nothing happened. went and edited the url to eliminate
the return to selected web page directive and went to
this page "http://chat.msn.com/ie_download.msnw" looked
the same, got the same dialog box, told it yes, nothing
happened. copied that addy out of the dialog box and went
there to "http://chat.msn.com/bin/msnchat45.cab" told it
yes, download, a download box finally appeared, nothing
happened. closed it and there was another download box
behind it which had transferred the files, download
complete. went back to enter a chatroom with my 'stolen
software' ;) and it tries to download it again with no
smiley face ever showing up. HELP! i have a brand new
comp, XP Pro OS, no network yet, asus a7v8x-mx
motherboard with amd athlon xp 2600+ 333 fsb socket a
processor, dialup, 120gig hard drive, had no problem
downloading anything else. help don't really want to dump
cookies (have lots of username/password combos and no
wallet) would it help to empty temp internet files? just
mine, or all of them for each user? I'm the
administrator. How can I tell if it's just my temp file
or it's a common, or shared file with everyone's temp
pages? oops, not a chat question  is there a free
wallet program you could recommend? help

XP doesxn't come with the Virtual Machine (aka Java)
since microsoft lost the lawsuit filed against them by
sun microsystems. Now to ask for a few more details.
Where are you trying to download this software from? You
do realize that msn is charging for chatting now? For a
real chat client that actually works and needs NO VM or
special settings/software, go to http://mermeliz.com and
get MSChat 2.5 (aka Microsoft Comic Chat). The MSN
servers may be dead, but we kept comic chat going and
created our own servers for it. there is a complete
listing of servers on mermy's site. If anyone tries to
tell you it won't work with XP, they are full of it,
because I use XP and use Comic Chat.

{This is his answer to everyone with a chat question, I
want to chat on MSN, not some stupid comic chat room]

Here is my reply to him:

OK, yes I know I had to get extra storage for hotmail in
order to chat.
And a couple of weeks ago with my old Win 95 comp,I
downloaded chat 2 and chat 2.5 to try to get into msn
chat and they wouldn't work in msn chatrooms, only in
dedicated comic rooms. I don't want to chat with comic
chat, it doesn't work with msn chat sites, and I want to
chat in some of my groups' chatrooms with friends and
business associates.
I go to chat home, pick a chatroom and get the first
download page. Also I have gotten to the chat download
page from chat links within some of my groups.
This is important to my online business marketing plan
(not just to kill time playing games, or something.) Does
java sun chat client work msn chat rooms? If so, how do I
start it so I can enter a room. If not, do I need to
download MS Virtual Machine? Will that mess with my
ability to use java sun? Should I be asking this in
windows XP news group? I didn't see anything about it in
the mesages I read last night.

Well here it is, hope someone can help.

Thank you for the suggestion and the link, (good link for
virtual machine info.) I did install all three virtual
machine links in order, went back to the site to view
the 'build version' and it doesn't think I have virtual
machine. Went to MS Update and scanned, no updates
available. Went to enter ms chat and I still never "see
the smiley face" if I didn't already have a lot of
business contacts through ms chat, I wouldn't worry about
it, but I just finally got messenger, and none of my
associates are in it yet, have to go to ms chat rooms to
find and add them.
Should I go ahead and install Java (or re-install) from
Sun Microsystems? Will that help get into ms chat? I
already have a java sun installed which I use for
everywhere chat.
Thanks again..
