I have recently installed a C-Media CMI8783 PCI Sound card into my system. It
is installed and the device is shown as "Enabled" in DM, and has no problems
shown in the explaination box.

HOWEVER, When i go inyon Sounds & Devices, My Defaults are not allowing me
to change from "No Audio Devices"

Any help on this matter would be greatly Appriciated.

I've ran all through the troubleshooter several times to no avail. The vloume
icon will not be in the "Tray" until an audio device is allocated as default.
and (unfortunately) it is this that is the problem, inabilty to set a default
sound device.
(I know how but the option is grayed out)

Have you disabled the built-in Sound Chip on the motherboard? If you
can't in Computer Bios, have you tried in Device Manager?

Sound Chip on Motherboard is disabled in DM, Still my Options are grayed out
in Sounds & Audio Properties.

This is Becoming a matter of urgancy, as part of my job is listening to and
editing music for a Drama Company.

I had similar prob when I downloaded C-Media AC97 from windows updates. My
brother checked what audio & voice defaults were set in sound & audio
properties, they were set as Modem#0 Line Playback and there was no other
choice. We checked the DM to ensure all devices were enabled then we tried
updating driver for any that showed a fault, then followed hardware wizard to
search the web. If it cannot complete update as mine didnt we went to
Add/remove in control panel & removed all sound/audio devices then repeated
proceedure through DM. Then check DM to see if prob is fix, my new device was
Realtek Ac'97 audio device then we went to audio & devices and were allowed
to change defaults to Realtek. I dont Know if this helps but it fixed mine.

Thanks, But unfortunately i have tried this several times to no avail.

I am hoping to get this problem sorted soon, as if this problem is not
solved within a month, i will be forced to take my PC to a PC Repair Clinic
and Ask them for help. I would prefer not to do this, as i have very little
money to pay for any repairs.

Thanks to all who have tried to help, to others, keep trying!

Thanks

Hi XPUK2.0,

The Sound Chip on the motherboard, should not appear disabled in the
Device Manager, because it should be disabled in Computer BIOS. When it is
disabled in Computer BIOS, it should not be listed in the Device Manager.

Do this:
Uninstall all C-Media Programs, thru Add or Remove Programs and then
reboot. During the reboot, go into Computer BIOS and disable the Onboard
Sound Chip. Save and exit BIOS. Now after you have reached the Desktop,
prevent Windows from installing the Sound Card. Insert the CD that came with
the PCI Sound Card and install the Drivers amd programs associated with it.
Reboot.

Check out Sound operation on the reboot.
