Clicking Adobe Reader 6 icon starts Windows Messenger 5.0 Installation

William Low

I just installed Adobe Reader 6 and now when I click its program icon on my
desktop, Windows Messenger 5's installation program starts and keeps
starting no matter how many times I click Cancel. I already have Windows
Messenger 5 installed. I remember something like this happening with
another program a long time ago but I can't remember how I was told to fix
this. Can you help me?

Thanks.

Greetings William,

You can probably use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to fix this.

First, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/office2000pro/util20/1/NT4/EN-US/msicuu.exe

Run and install the program after you've downloaded it. After the setup is complete, click
Start, then Programs (All Programs if you're using XP), then Windows Install Clean Up.

Click Windows Messenger 5.0 and then click 'Remove'. Click 'OK' to the warning message that
comes up.

Then try running Adobe Reader 6 again. Windows Messenger should also still work, if not,
reinstall it from here:

Jonathan:

I have the same problem as William only I previously
removed Windows Messenger, and I do not care to have it
on my system. I've tried your suggestion, but Windows
Messenger 5.0 does not show up as an available program to
remove when I run Windows Installer Clean Up. Only three
programs show up; Windows Installer Clean Up,
Webfldrs.XP, and Quicken 2004.

As I mentioned before, I previously removed Windows
Messenger, and even tried removing and reinstalling Adobe
Reader 6.0 (several times). Do you have any other
suggestions?

Joe
