Problem with Windows Messenger 5.0

Jennifer

I just downloaded and installd an update for Adobe
Reader. Every time I click on the desktop icon, Windows
Installer pops up and says it's "preparing to install
Windows Messenger 5.0." Then I get an error message that
says "error occurred during installation of assembly
component" and then there's a number the size of
Manhattan. Then "HRESULT:-2147024864.

Does anyone know 1)why in the world Windows Messenger
would be trying to install just because I've downloaded
the Adobe update; and 2) what can I do to resolve the
problem?

Thanks for any help.

Greetings Jennifer,

Both Adobe and Messenger use the Windows Installer. One of the Windows Installer's functions
is to identify applications which are 'damaged' and then attempt their repair, which is what
you're seeing. To fix this, firstly, uninstall Windows Messenger 5 by clicking Start, then
Run, and type the
following:
msiexec /x {1F0BD960-6525-4FEE-B577-2473F77F1277}
then click OK.

Then, after uninstallation, reinstall Windows Messenger 5 from:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=77c3799f-6388-4193-8002-be55584c1ac1

Actually, the info you gave did not fix the problem, but
I found another message in which you advised that
Norton's might be the culprit. I followed your
directions in deselected scanning of "instant messages"
in Norton's and that took care of the problem. Thank
you, so much.
