Clean install xp home

I have been trying to instal xp home (from a legitimate cd) but the
installation stops at :- reparing installation , setup will complete in
approx 39 mins. Little green travelling boxes bottom right traverse about 10
times then stop and machine freezes. Restart fires up windows and restarts
setup which goes to the same point and freezes
This happens with only one hard drive in machine and exactly the same using
drive as slave. The drive is a Maxtor 40G. Tha Mother board Aopen AMD
athlon. System runs fine on 4G Drive.

Still no go!! I tried all day with two different hard discs and different
memory chips,
reset bios by holding home on start up, Reformatted fast, slow ; tried
every variation known to man so must have a dead motherboard or CPU.
It still gets as far as " installing windows , setup will complete in 39
minutes" a few dozen passes of the little green boxes then freeze. I have
left it for several hours and still no change.

Any inspiration out there??
