WinXP Pro installation stops at various points

Am trying to install Win XPPro on a machine with these
specs: PIII 550, 655 MB RAM (lots), 20 GB WD205AA HD

Was Win98, Fdisked and formatted drive to NTFS, ran setup
several times using several different Win XP CD's and the
install always stops. Mostly stops at "39 minutes
remaining - loading devices", but sometimes has gotten as
far as entering the license code before freezing.

I have tried different CD's, even a different CD player
to no avail.

Any help appreciated!

This can usually happen with faulty RAM or Bad Video Card.

Remove one memory module [if 2 or more] try again. If it fails, then swap
out RAM and try again.

Another method to try:

Boot up to your Windows 98 Startup Floppy and FDISK & reformat HDD to FAT32.

Reboot to Windows 98 Startup Floppy and make sure you have CD support.

Locate the folder I386 and copy this to the C Drive.

Once copying is finished, type in 'C:\' and press enter key
then type in 'CD:\I386' and press enter key
then type in 'WINNT.EXE' and press enter key

This will start the XP installation from the hard drive.
