LaserJet 2200 DN driver software installation fails under XP Pro S

I have a new notebook (HP zd7000) with Win XP Pro SP2. When I try to install
the driver software for my HP LaserJet 2200 DN (network printer with built in
JetDirect print server) from the CD it fails with a message about a "severe
error".

For some reason the "Add Printer" dialog won't allow me to enter the
printer's IP address. I have to install the software from the printers
driver CD. It detects the printer on the network, installs drivers,
establishes a connection port, etc. Then I can add the printer. Except
under Win XP Pro SP2 it crashes with a "severe error".

This same printer and software CD has worked with Win95, Win2K, Win XP Home
SP1. (I've used Linux and Solaris boxes on my LAN with the same printer.)

HP Tech. Support suspects that this is a problem with SP2. We turned off
the firewall, but that didn't make any difference.

Has anyone gotten HP's LaserJet 2200 software to install on XP Pro with SP2?

Thanks.

Some additional info.

The Printer System Software installation has a few options. If I choose
"Basic Microsoft Server Setup" (which lets my computer manage its own print
jobs) the installation fails with a "severe error" message. If I choose
"Client Setup" the installation succeeds and I can print via the shared
printer.
