Clean install of Windows XP SP1

I know this question has been asked a million times already but I have
forgotten the answer. I wish to clean install Windows XP SP1 on a HP PC
where I only have the recovery discs. I also have an XP Home version 2002
Upgrade disc.

Can I purchase the XP SP1 Upgrade disc and use the old XP upgrade as
qualifying OS or will I need to purchase the full version of SP1?

If you're using an upgrade copy of XP Home, you'll need a qualifying
product to show to the installation program when it asks. Do you have
a copy of Win98 or ME?

Also, why would you want to purchase another copy of XP that includes
SP-1 when you can download SP-1 for free from MS? Just install XP
Home clean (if you have a qualifying product) and then download and
install SP-1. Just be sure your HP will function with an off the
shelf copy of XP. HP machines are usually proprietary and require
drivers. Do your homework first = go to the HP web site and be sure
you can download all the drivers your machine needs to function.

No. I sold my copy of Win ME with my old machine.

The only copy of XP that I have is the Upgrade (original version). The copy
of XP on my box is from the HP recovery discs. The question is will the XP
(old version) Upgrade CD work as a qualifying product for the XP SP1 Upgrade
disc.

I have all the current drivers backed up on CDR.

I don't think it will, however, XP Home edition qualifies as an
upgrade for XP Pro, so you've nothing to lose by trying. You might
also think about borrowing a Win98 or ME CD from a friend just in case
it doesn't work.

That's good. I have found HP and Compaq to be real fussy about the
proprietary hardware with respect to drivers.

Are you looking to purchase the CD that has SP1 only on it? "Purchase"
isn't exactly the right word since the charges are for "shipping and
handling." That CD will only install on an XP system. It does not require
you to present your XP CD.

http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/ordercd.asp

Also for HP systems, there is an update you need to get from the HP website
that sorts out some issues between OEM XP, HP's Recovery/Repair program and
SP1.
