Chkdsk

Sunshine

I have a dual boot system; XP and W2000. I am having a problem with the XP
drive (D:). The system would not boot up in XP, I would get a blue screen
that flashed on and off so quickly that I could not read it. I did see
chkdsk and virus. Since the drive was recently scanned for viruses and I
had recently installed a DVD-RW drive, I tried to chkdsk. Windows 2000
(C:) worked properly and I was able to run chkdsk / f on the C: drive and
the extended drives. The D: drive and its extended drives did not appear in
My Computer so I could not chkdsk. Finally, I was able to boot the D:\
drive in safe mode and ran chkdsk. The process did not complete, after
about 9% it would restart. Since the D:\ drive now appears in My Computer
in W2000 I ran chkdsk /f on the drive and got the following message: "Chkdsk
cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run
if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD
THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume" This
reads as something I want to do, but I don't have a clue. Thanks for your
help.

Hi,

Actually, you should boot the WinXP CD and enter the Recovery Console by
pressing 'r' when prompted. Then from the command prompt run "chkdsk D: /r".
The version of the NTFS file system used by WinXP is beyond that designed to
be handled by the Win2K version of chkdsk.

Is your BIOS set to boot from CD as the first boot device?
Many systems require that you 'hit any key' to boot from CD.
Have you tried a CD/DVD cleaner disk?

I meant to clean the CD deck, if the read head is even partially covered by
dust/debris, it may not read the CD properly.

Hi Sunshine,

You may want to power down and reseat the cabling in that case.

Why, when using an 80 conductor IDE/ATA ribbon, recommended by PX-716A, the
BIOS setting is CD-ROM drive not installed. Therefore unable to startup
using XP CD?

After numerous attempts, chkdsk still does not complete more than 30% on the
drive. Is this an indication that the 80 gb drive is about to crash?

Hi,

Are you running it from the Recovery Console?
