CHKDSK, System Restore problems

I'm regular in using Harddisk tools (Checkdisk and disk defragmentor), and in updating my OS (Win XP Pro)

Last week, I noticed that "System Information" (Start > Accessories > System Tools) was not functioning. Since then, I made number of trips to MS Newsgroups and during one such trip, read a MS Knowledge Base article about Blaster worm and how to remove it. Out of curiosity, I checked my registry and to my horror, found an entry > KBBot.Worm, the one specified in the article, and deleted it. Am not aware whether it's because of this or not, but ever since, I'm discovering some fault or the other with my computer. The latest being, when I tried Windows Update, the update scanning couldn't be carried out due to an unnamed error. Last week Kelly managed to get my "System Information" to get working again, while other problems still remained. They are

#1. Am not able to use checkdisk (CHKDSK)
#2. System Restore not functioning. I get the error message - "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again." However, even after restart it's not working
#3. Half of the 'Services' in the Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services, are unable to run
#4. My Network Places folder is blank; I mean, I remember to have seen an application in the folder earlier, which is missing now

There're still some more items to list, but I'd rather wait until these problems are sorted out, they look awesome and I wonder how I accomplished to mess things up so smoothly.

Hope someone would be able to sort these problems

Thanks for your cooperation and help

You said that you deleted the Registry item. This may not be
sufficient to remove the virus, so you should scan this machine and
make sure that it is disinfected.

Yes, but how to scan the system when chkdsk is not working? Any ideas on that.

Thank you for your response, and your above point is well taken and shall be followed diligently

Wrong kind of scan. Thorsten was referring to scanning the system with an
antivirus program that has current virus definitions installed. Some
viruses will interfere with that operation. A visit to one of the online
scanners can be done instead. Here are links to some of those that are
available:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Also, you found kbot in the registry. You could look that up at one of the
antivirus sites (www.symantec.com, for instance) and grab a copy of the
instructions for manual removal.

I did scan with Macfee anti-virus and also "Stinger", a special scanner for repair/removal for the Blaster Worm I removed. The system is sanitized. All I want is to get it into full working mode. In order to do that I want to know why the CHKDSK is not working

Thank you for your help
