CHKDSK error

steve

When I run CHKDSK from the command prompt it says,
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocatd in the
volume bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F option to correct these.

When I run it with /F the problem is NOT fixed.
If I do a CHKNTFS c: It reports c: is not dirty.
I'm running XP PRO
The system seems to run fine. How can I fix the CHKDSK
errors?
Thanks,Steve

Instead of starting the disk-check from a command prompt, try this:

Open 'My Computer', right-click the drive you want to check, click on
'Properties'
then click the 'Tools' tab. Click 'Check Now' and then tick both options,
and click 'Start'.
Of course, Windows will say it can't perform the task within Windows, just
answer 'Yes' and the check will run when you re-start.

I've found this method more thorough and reliable than the command-line way,
since the /f switch on it's own isn't enough to do a thorough check.

Hopefully error checking will repair the problem but it seems either your
Master File Table ($mft) or Cluster Allocation Bitmap ($bitmap) are corrupt
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303079 (see "NTFS File System
Corruption",) possibly from a virus attack . You might try to defrag the
MFT using PerfectDisk
http://www.raxco.com/products/downloadit/perfectdisk2000_download.cfm but I
don't think this will fix it.
