Changing language on Windows XP

I have bought a Toshiba laptop and given as a gift to my mother who only
speaks Portuguese. I would like to change the language of Window XP to
Brazilian Portuguese, how do I do that? Do I have to buy a whole new copy of
Windows XP in Brazil? Or can I download Brazilian Protuguese language pack
for free? Where?

Thanks.

How recently did you purchase the laptop? If it is very recently
purchased then you might repeat might get some assistance from Toshiba
in this regard.

Otherwise you will have to purchase a new copy of Windows XP. And the
installation could be complicated because the Toshiba laptop almost
certainly uses at least some proprietary hardware components that
require drivers that are not included in the retail or generic OEM
Windows XP CDs.

Good luck

Windows XP is written in specific language versions, therefore one
cannot change it from one language version to another. You'll need
to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP in the language version
you desire, reformat your drive and install it "clean".

Or if you have an available empty drive or partition, you can install
another "Full Version" of Windows XP in a different language version
and create a dual-boot configuration.

I bought it a month ago but currently it's in Brazil with my mom, not
accessible.
Will I have problems if I reinstall a new copy of windows xp? How can I
prepare myself for reinstallation when she comes to visit in a few months?

When you install, you'll have to take the option to format the hard disk
as you won't be able to install a different language version over the
old one.

So back up all your data...

You may have problems because the hardware in the Toshiba will require
special drivers from Toshiba that will not be on the regular Windows
XP installation CDs.

What you need to do is to go to the Toshiba web site and download the
Windows XP drivers for the exact model that you purchased and burn
these to a CD. Then when you do install the new XP on the computer
you can insert that CD to load the correct drivers.

Good luck
