I changed the settings on my laptop from a domain (setup
at work) to a workgroup (to use at home) and Windows XP
Pro said it needed to restart to complete the change.
Upon restart, it requested a normal logon, but refuses to
let me in. I get the following error message:

"The system could not log you on. Make sure your User
name and domain are correct then type your password
again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the
correct case. Make sure that Caps Lock is not
accidentally on."

I can no longer logon on to my laptop, even to change the
settings back to they way they were! Any help would be
appreciated.

thx

This is analogous to locking your keys in the car.

As your last act while logged on to the domain, you told the computer to
stop allowing domain accounts to log on. It actually did warn you about
this.....

You need to log on with an account that is *local* to the machine. For
example, the built-in "adminstrator" account. It's likely that you'll need
to take the computer to your work's IT department and have them put it back
on the domain.

Boot up to SAFE MODE and login as administrator and change the settings.

One can log into the administrator account with or without safe mode... the
question is whether he knows the password.

Greetings --

By changing the computer from the domain to a workgroup, you have
destroyed the trust between the domain and the machine. In doing so,
you have also rendered any domain login credentials as invalid.
You'll need to create a new local user account for your use.

1) Restart the computer and log in using the built-in Administrator
account.

2) Click Start > Run and enter "control userpasswords2" followed by
clicking "OK."

3) Click "Add....", creating a new username and filling in the
desired information, and then click "Next >"

4) Set the password as desired and click "Next >"

5) Select the desired privilege access level for the new user account
and click "Finish."

Please see the following Knowledge Base article for an alternate
method and more information:

HOW TO Create and Configure User Accounts in Windows XP

6) Once the new account has been created, follow the instructions in
the following Knowledge Base article to copy data from your old domain
user account's profile to the new one:

How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile
