Migrating from domain to workgroup.

To all,

We recently changed companies/offices. We previously logged into Windows XP
Pro through a domain. Our new office does not have access to the domain. We
changed the connection to a workgroup type, and now cannot log into the
workstation. I found out - too late - that we should have added a local user
before we switched to the workgroup.

Is there any way I can use the system restore feature to change back to a
domain logon? Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

See the link below on what to do when you can not access your local
administrator account. I tend to doubt that System Restore will do the trick
but it may be worth a try. I hope you did not encrypt any files with EFS
at some point as you may not be able to access them again unless able to
logon as the domain account. --- Steve

Steven,

Thanks for the tip.

I don't believe any of the files were encrypted with EFS.

Does XP automatically create an Administrator account when you switch from a
domain to a workgroup? Do you know if this is the same Administrator that is
asked to log into the System Recovery (for some reason it accepted my
password there)?

Thanks again,

Eric

The built in administrator account is always there regardless of if you are
in a workgroup or domain. I believe it is the same account used for Recovery
Console if that is what you mean. Try booting into Safe Mode to see if that
works in case the built in administrator account is disabled. You can use
the command net localgroup administrators to see the list of accounts in
that group and the command net user administrator to see if it is active or
inactive [disabled]. --- Steve
