Change .htaccess in Front Page as Error404 page points elsewhere

I would like to modify the .htaccess file so that it points to MY OWN Error
404 page(this also applies to Error 401, etc messages returned); at present,
error pages go to an external and unrelated site which doesn't look good.

I've put this in General Questions - hope that's the right place.

Does your hosting account support custom error pages??
What type of server and server OS is your site hosted on??
If Apache / UNIX, custom error pages are created via the webmasters CPanel.
