I am re-structuring my web site, adding sub webs etc but am affraid to remove
existing pages because there are lots of external links to my pages and I am
worried about error 404 messages all over the place etc!

FrontPage 2003 authomatically updates changes when you move or rename a
page. However make sure that every page is being updated. Also recalculate
hyperlinks. Be very carefull when moving or changing files.

You want someone who has a bookmark to pageA.html, to be automatically
redirected to pageB.html?

Investigate ISAPIRewrite for Windows hosts, or ways to use .htaccess for
*nix hosts.

Yes basically, also, for purposes of search engine rankings etc, I am more
concerned with external links into my web pages than I am my own internal
links which are easy enough to rectify!

the basic nuts and bolts of the problem is that when I set the site up I was
being rather lazy, I own several domain names and wanted to use the same web
space for them all but instead of taking the time to suss out sub webs I just
set up web pages all over the place which has become ratehr unwieldy now so i
have decided to do a total re-vamp and re-structure to create sub webs and
keep all pages for one domain name into a separate sub web etc! hoep this
makes things clearer!

The simple answer is to say that I should not have been so lazy in the first
place then I would not be in this mess!

If you have them in folder and convert the folder to subweb, then you do not need to worry. However
if you really had no structure and now you have move the content around, you will have to break the
incoming links, as the search engines will never remove the old links, unless you can force a http
301 error code.

Will modifying the .htaccess work on a FP site hosted on a *nix server ?

Sadly, I was VERY lazy and had absolutelly NO structure to the web site, did
not even know I could create sub folders etc!

Goes to show that it is never wise to undertake a job such as building a web
site without looking into all these issues! the sad bit is I read a lot of
info. which told me about making sure I had the structure in place and had a
clear idea of how things would be organised befor eproceeding but, as always,
I chose to fumble in the dark, the only consolation is that I have learnt
through this experience and, in reality, the sites have only been around a
short while (about 8 Months!) so it should not be too drastic, what about
pages to deal with error 404 codes? would these work and how do I do it?

ISAPIRewrite is just for this situation. It will send a 303 header to the
spiders (permanently moved).
