Change file icon image

Zakhary

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP Professional on my laptop. By
default, the media player edition that comes with the system is the 9 series.
I like the 10 series best, so upgrade to that (yes, I do not like 11 or 12).

For some reason, when I updated this time around, the icons of all the files
that use WMP for playback use the 9 series-based icon instead of the 10
series-based icon. Unlike with applications, where you can right-click the
application's icon, go to properties, and then click on "Change Icon," for
these files that make use of an application, no "change icon" button is
available under properties. How do I change the icon associated with these
files so that they use the 10 series-based icon instead of the 9 series one?

Thanks many,
Zakhary

It's probably the case that the file icons (I presume you mean the icons for like
[.mp3] [.wav] [.wmv] [.mpg] [.mid] [.rmi] media files) HAVE been changed (the
"source" for the icons being contained within an Application Extension [.dll] file
that MUST get updated too).

The problem is probably being caused by what is called the ShellIconCache - the fact
is Windows has loads of "short cuts" for speed of use - one of them being to cache
icon images in a file which doesn't necessarily get updated when [if] you upgrade a
program that contains icons for associated file-types.

If you wait for Windows to go through a week's worth of re-boots, I think you'll find
that your [media] file icons DO get updated to the newer ones in the end, without the
need for any other intervention.

There are, BTW, several programs that contain a "Refresh Icon Cache" button - one of
these being "TweakUI.exe" - small and free from Microsoft. If you cleared the
ShellIconCache you would see the newer icons immediately (presuming I am right, that
is).

Download the small TweakUI installation file from the link below :

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

....and go to the very last item "Repair", select "Rebuild Icons" and hit the "Repair
Now" button.

You are correct in my reference to file icons implied the icons of the media
files that use the application. That refresher tool did the trick of getting
rid of the old icon and updating to the new. Problem resolved!

Thanks tremendously,

Uninstall both 9 & 10. Reinstall 10. Should straighten it
out. Or maybe ten has a bug? Or they weren't changed and you
used something 3rd party? Dunno.

No problem... thankyou for re-posting that your problem was resolved.

So many don't bother, and it can be mildly frustrating.
