I connected my sony ericsson z500a cell phone to my computer, using the
cingular USB data cable, but get a "not connected" icon in the "my phones"
window, nor does it show up in "my computer". even tho I receive the tone
letting me know a USB device has been detected. I am using XP Home Edition
with SP2. Please advise on how to enable my pc to see my phone.thanks

Read the user manual that came with the phone or call Sony!

This is not a Windows issue.

Thanks for the superlative in depth response, which certainly must have taxed
your technological knowledge, however it is a windows issue, as XP should
recognize the USB connected device ( cell phone ) as a removeable drive (
much like a CF, SD, SM, etc { I can further expound for you if necessary },
as it does on other machines I have connected to. Any useful information will
be appreciated.

It's not going to recognize anything if it doesn't know what it is... It
needs some sort of drivers installed so it knows what you have connected,
and what to do with it. It's like your car, your aren't going to get
anywhere in it without the keys! Install the drivers that came with the
cable or the phone, or buy the proper software as you should have in the
first place...

Drivers are installed with "the proper software" from the manufacturer, and
add new hardware wizard finds it, installs the windows drivers for modem,
etc. and my computer still does not show the device. Sony Ericsson swears
that the phone is compatable, so puts the problem back with XP. Thanks for
the attempt at helping resolve this issue, hopefully someone who has had
experience with this particular problem will respond also.

I have the same problem. Did you ever find a solution? I have talked to
Cingular and Sony on several occasions, and spent probably 50 hours trying to
figure it out. I've re-installed software, tried the drivers from
susteen.com (who provides the Sony drivers), modem scripts, dial up net
working and am still at a loss. Sony actually went and connected my to my
motherboard manufacturer when they couldn't solve the problem.
