Set IMAPI service to manual and use a third party CD writing program
such as Nero Burning Rom

No not a stupid question, you can create music CDs with media
player, never used any of the others you mention, so can't comment
about their ability/suitability.
Nero Express would have to be one of the most user friendly third
party programs, and "usually" comes bundled with CD-RW drives, if not
with your PC, you can try before you buy.

You are reading this newsgroup ising the web interface--probably the worst
possible way to do so. Most of the rest of us read it using a newsreader,
such as Outlook Express. When you use a newsreader, you get to control the
order that messages are displayed in. So what *you* perceive as "the post
above you" as not necessarily the same as what everyone else sees.

Sorry, a bit new to forums.. the gist is there was a missing registry entry..
I was provided with a script from a "good" machine and all worked OK..details
follow...

This is the text of the .reg file exported from my good machine (between <
and >):

<Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{fbeb8a05-beee-4442-804e-409d6c4515e9}]
@="ShellFolder for CD Burning"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{fbeb8a05-beee-4442-804e-409d6c4515e9}\InProcServer32
@=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,\
00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,53,00,48,00,\
45,00,4c,00,4c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,00,00
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{fbeb8a05-beee-4442-804e-409d6c4515e9}\MergedFolder]
"Attributes"="0x0"
"AttributeMask"="0xffffffff"
"Location"="@shell32.dll,-12589"
"ConflictOverlayIcon"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,\
6f,00,6f,00,74,00,25,00,5c,00,73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,\

2c,00,2d,00,32,00,33,00,32,00,00,00>

I guess you know how to import registry keys, but in case not, you need to
paste the above into Notepad or similar text editor, and save as a file with
..reg extension, and then launch the file (double or single click depending on
how you have set up Folder Options)

Thanks to William George for this solution.

I had the same problem - the wizzard told me it was unable to write to a cd
and that the cd now may be unusable - i entered this registry that you
indicated and rebooted, but i still get the error message - any other
suggestions?

Hi, I've been looking through various postings regarding the problem being
discussed. I have been trying without success to fix this error myself for
quite a while now. I have just tried you registry edit suggestion but have
found that all the entries including binary are correct on my system, IMAPI
service is running and the drive is checked for CD writing, yet as soon as I
attempt to write any kind of CD, imapi service is stopped automatically and I
get the error " Can't complete the CD writing wizard..." I know I can use a
second party software and disable the imapi all together, but I am bewildered
as to why the XP host software will not work. I wonder if you are aware of
any downloadable patches from Microsoft that can fix the error,I ask because
I have searched their update site and knowledge base to no avail.

Any further suggestions would be apreciated.

Hey there. Looks like you and I have the same problem. I have narrowed it
down to the imapi service being turned off as soon as you hit next on the
wizard to write the pictures to the disc. Does anyone know what would cause
the service to be switched off like that? When the disc ejects, and is
replaced with a new blank disc, the cd drive does recognize it as a propper
disc. But then the same thing happens again. I would restart the imapi
service, and as soon as I hit next on the wizard, it is switched off again
and the wizard errors out. Anybody have any ideas???
