cdr drive won't recognise blank discs

I have a CD/DVD-R/RW drive that won't recognise blank
CDRs for writing, yet it does read and write DVDs. Not a
drive (hardware) fault; exchanged the drive and same
problem. I did install, and then subsequently junk Roxio
EZCD Creator 6 due to operating problems, then did a non -
destructive re-install of XP/Pro - no change. I'm sure
it's a software issue; any clues will be gratefully
received!
 
did you up-date 6 , there a bunch of them. Also I have
had bad luck with cheap CD-R's and DVD's I will not buy
naything but memorex.
