I have a CD-RW and a DVD-RW running in XP Home Edition.I have to set the
drives to PIO only in the advanced IDE settings in order to record. However,I
have to change to DMA if available to listen to music. Any suggestions?

Do the drives share an IDE Channel ? Normally, you should not have
to reduce operating modes to record. There are cases where having
two optical drives on the same channel (Primary/Secondary) can result
in abnormal operation. You would probably benefit from a Chipset
driver update for the ATAPI/IDE controller drivers. Also, check the
jumper settings to ensure that each is configured properly. Also, it's
very common for most optical recorders to have new Firmware flash
codes released for them. Check the Mfg's website and see if newer
code is available for each. Usually, Optical drive Firmware updates
will run/execute directly from within Windows.

Find out why you have to set the drives to PIO mode. Almost nobody has to
do this.

Stop relying on software to fix hardware. Replace your ide ribbon cable
with an 80 wire version.
