CD rom is missing after adding memory

I recently added some RAM to my computer. While I was installing it, I had to
unplug some cables. I plugged them back in, put the computer together and
started it back up. It worked fine until I noticed that the CD rom drive is
missing from My computer. I tried a system restore and that didn't bring it
back so I thought maybe I had mixed the cables up when I installed the
memory. So I switched the cables back and still no sign of the cd rom. Don't
know what the cables were for but the computer appears to be working. Any
ideas on what I did to mess things up? Hewlett packard computer with Windows
XP.

also, I took an external cd from another computer and hooked it up to this
one. It shows up in Device manager, and it will play anything I put into it.
But when I try and copy to it, I got a message saying the drive is not
accesble.
