CD-Rom Drive Won't Work!!!

Help!!! My CD-Rom Drive will open and close, but after I close it, it makes a
whirling sound like it is starting, but nothing happens. Then I go to my
computer, and the CD-Rom Drive doesn't show up. I can't go online, but my
internet suddenly stopped working-so I'm trying to install the wireless card
to get the internet back so I can download something to fix the CD-Rom
Drive-See my problem. But I really don't want to spend a lot of money to buy
a new CD-Rom Drive-I don't have a lot of money for that or a new computer. I
bought a CD-Rom Drive for a PC a while ago-before this happened- but it won't
fit in my computer right? Any suggestions-or should I just take my sister's
computer that is a PC that works- because she just bought a laptop for
college.
Might I have to reinstall Windos XP on my computer to get rid of any viruses
or anything?
Thanks in advance for any help from anyone.

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot
