CD-Rom drive

Can anyone please tell me how to get my cd-rom drive back? Twice now my cd-rom drive has just disappeared. This time it was after I uninstalled a Norton Security program. The last time it went I managed to get it back by using system restore. This time it wont let me do that, it states that it cannot restore & I have tried numerous restore points but no luck. Someone please help!!
