CD-Rom Drives Displaying As Unknown Devices

RJM

Both my CD-Rom Drives were not reading discs unless "Nero" was running in
the
background. I went to a help website that told me to edit a few registry
keys that had to do with "upper filter" and "lower filter" settings.

Now, my CD-Rom drives show up as "unknown devices" in the Device manager and
I am STILL unable to read discs.

I tried a system restore, but was told "windows was unable to restore my
computer back to that restore point." WHAT GIVES?

Can someone help me? Thanks in advance.

To reinstall the MS generic cdrom drivers..
In my computer, tools, folder options, view tab, in advanced settings,
you'll need to first mark "show hidden files and folders", then uncheck the
box for "Hide extensions of known file types".. Now you can go to the
windows\INF folder and find "cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install
from the menu..
Remember to change back to your original settings in folder options..

Nero is not needed, if you only have CD-ROM drives..
What are the make and model of your optical drives..?

May help, post your results..
