CD Drives Unknown in Device Manager

Suddenly my CD-ROM drives (HP DVD Writer 200j and Samsung
SC-148C) are not working properly. They are properly
recognized in the BIOS and by Windows Explorer. However,
Device Manager sees them as Unknown Devices. The CD
drives no longer Autoplay I have tried uninstalling and
re-installing my CD-ROM drives to no avail. When I
double click on either of the CD-ROM drives in Explorer,
I initially get an error message stating "Drive E or F:\
is inaccessible. Incorrect function." However, after I
play something using MusicMatch or Windows Media Player,
Windows Explorer will then let me access the CD-ROMs by
double clicking. I have tried deleting the upper and
lower filters in the registry and that doesn't work
either.

If anyone knows how to get Device Manager to recognize my
CD-ROM drives, I'd greatly appreciate the advice. Thanks.

You wouldn't happen to have any Roxio software on your computer, or have you
had it installed in the past?

I do have Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 6. I have had it
installed for months, but this problem just appeared. I
also have MusicMatch on my machine. I don't know what
software is used for its burning engine. Do you suggest
I delete Roxio? I'm willing to try anything.

Try this:

There are values in the registry that are causing the problem. The problem
can be resolved by going to the Regedit tool and going to the following
folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Once there, right-click on and delete the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFitlers"
values.

I hope this helps anyone else who has this problem with the mysterious
disappearing CD-RW drive.

Thanks for trying. I did it and then uninstalled and
reinstalled the CD-ROMs. They came back as Unknown
again. Very frustrating. But, I appreciate your efforts.
