CD read error- Blue screen

Hi, my nephew's computer comes up with a blue screen saying something about
"cd read error", press Ctrl,Alt,Del. He does this and it continually comes up
same error, I told him to put the disc back in cd rom and reboot, but same
error comes up. Him being a kid I'm thinking maybe he has a virus. I was
thinking of going over to his house at booting with Norton Anti Virus and
hopefully scanning for viruses, is this worth a try?, I tried to get him to
boot to safe mode but I don't think he knew quite how to do it the way I was
explaining to him. Any other useful ideas? His computer is a Compaq Presario,
running Windows XP (600mhz, 384RAM) Thanks in advance

Will it read any CD-R in Windows XP? If not, try booting up with a boot CD
(a WinXP restore CD will do if available). If that doesn't work then one
possibility is that the CD drive has developed fault. This doesn't remind me
of a virus infection but that should be excluded anyway.

I don't have a restore cd, but I have an install cd, the computer also has 2
cd drives, I was thinking about disconnecting them one at a time to hopefully
isolate it.
