May be, you probably would not be able to go to the makers site and register it or even get updates for it, Why not buy the full version? Try www.play.com They seem to sell games at a good discount and their all new

Why dont you ask the seller if the cd key has been used for online gaming? but your best bet is to get it off www.play.com like murdoch just said 
Most of the time, even if the game has been used online, it will not stop you from using it again. I only know of 1 game that doesnt follow that rule. You may need their accnt name if its a 1 account per cd key like WoW, however, if you can make more then 1 account on that game, then your all clear as long as it hasnt been banned for reasons of hacking/cheating.
