CD DVD drives disabled

I searched and found what should be a solution in a similar post by Moses on
5/14/2007 titled, "Prohibited access to CD?DVD ROM drives". However, it is
not working in my case.

I got the same message as that user did, ""Administrator has prohibited
access to CD/DVD ROM drives." However, The MS-MVP Wesley Vogel initially
pointed to this web site: http://www.boyce.us/gp/gpcontent.asp?ID=549. I
looked and I don't have any registry key of
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer!NoViewOnDrive
and neither did Moses. Then Vogel suggested using gpedit.msc, but I'm not
sure if that worked for Moses because he didn't post again. However, I've
tried it and it has not fixed my problem. I cannot access my CD/DVD drives.

It started when I was working with Visual Studio and the MODI class, drawing
class, graphics class, and bitmap class to select portions of images and save
them as tiff files and performing OCR. During debugging (there is a seperate
Debugger Administrative account by the way which may be part of this issue) I
encountered protected memory access violations and had to reboot. I got the
message saying the Administrator disabled the CD/DVD drives when Windows XP
restarted.

At first I could see the drives in My Computer, but when I opened them there
was nothing there, and when I launch a game which requires the DVD that is in
my drive it says it's not there. The MVP in the .net.framework.drawing
newsgroup suggested that I remove and reinstall the drivers. Well, now I
don't even see the drives listed in My Computer!

I'm now stuck without the use of my CD/DVD drives! I need help! Thank You.

Steve, try a program called "Force ASPI" and if you use NERO use "Nero ASPI"
also. I don't have the links handy but have both installed on my system. You
might also look into doing a firmware update (all at your own risk!!!!)

Thanks, but I'd rather fix my system than hack it. Anything that says it's
"Force" or from a 3rd party other than Microsoft or my own creation does not
get my approval.

Also, I do have Nero ASPI and it is working properly; however, when I use
DiskInfo it says no drives found. My problem is at a kernel level not a
driver or application level. I need a Microsoft tech or someone who has
encountered this deeper problem to step me through solving this problem.

I also get a message that access is denied when I insert my flash drive into
my USB port! I've done everything I can using the administrative tools and
the registry...something has really broken here...I need some technical help
please.

I have the same problem. I posted this: Administrator has restricted this
computer to access USB/1394 mass storage drives but no one has responded to
my post. it happens with anything I try to install or when I connect a USB
flash drive or hard drive to the machine. this was a brand new machine, so I
don't think your working with Visual Studio had nothing to do with your
problem.

Thanks for posting. I thought this was supposed to be managed
newsgroups...if someone posts here and has not obtained a resolution a
microsoft support tech is supposed to reply. My system keeps getting more
unstable. PhotoDraw is not responding for several minutes at a time, and I'm
getting odd anomolies in the graphics that I'm pushing through the clipboard.
I guess my only option is to revert to a previous system retore point and
hope it solves my problem.
