Access to CD/DVD drives

I have, all of a sudden, received a restriction warning "Administrator has
prohibited access to CD/DVD drives". There is a red crossed circle over my
two external disk drives, my floppy disk, my internal and external DVD drives
and my USB drive.
I cannot do anything with my Norton's GoBack because the data is stored on
my external drive and my Windows restore programme will not make any changes.
I have logged on as Administrator in safe mode but still I am unable to
access the drives.
I am running an Intel D955XBK motherboard with an Intel dual core extreme
edition processor at 3200 Mhz

Can anyone give me some ideas?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Thanks for your response. I have my system checked by both Nortons and
Microsoft for virus's so I am convinced it is clean. I also have a Nortons
firewall and I have never been breached in the past.

Your point on what has changed made me look at the automatic updates and I
note my system has been updated by Microsoft. That is the only thing that
has changed on my system.

any response?
