cd/dvd drive

I have a HP zd7000 laptop running XP Home edition. My CD/DVD drive has some
issues.... When I put in a DVD it automatically plays. If I put in a
regular CD with data or programs on it the computer will not recognize a CD
is in the drive. I have uninstall and reinstalled the drive but have the
same results. The problem apparently is intermittent. The problem occured
then stopped and now is occuring again. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
