CD/DVD drive (E:) making Noise out of its own, when not in use?

My CD/DVD drive (E:) is making lot of frequent noises while not in use. It
runs "perfectly OK" when I put any CD or DVD into the disk drive; It is able
to read or write any CD or DVD; but when not in use (without a CD or DVD disk
into the drive) it makes lot of noise sometime coming out of its own, and
sometime while I type something on the keyboard. This has become more
frequent since the past one-month. Can anyone please suggest the cause and
solution to tackle this problem. Looking forward for your replies. Thanks in
advance!!!

I would suggest checking the drive is physically seated and secured firmly.
It could be that the mounting screws have come lose and the unit is
vibrating in sympathy with the pc's fans.
does the drive move in the bay if you press it with you finger?

hope that helps
