Captions with outline numbering

Can anyone explain how i insert a caption that increments like outline
numbering.

e.g the first one i insert is Figure 1.1 and the next 1.2 etc.

I guess this may need to tie into headings so it know when to change to 2, 3
etc. I just don't quite understand how this works.

I also have a mix of tables and figures so would want different captions and
numbering for each.

You'll need to use the built-in headings for heading numbering (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html). Make use
of Word's Caption feature, and set up the captions to include the
appropriate heading level: Click Insert | Reference | Caption (Word 2003) or
References tab | Insert Caption (Word 2007). In the Caption dialog box,
first choose the desired "Label" and then click Numbering (to open the
Caption Numbering dialog box) and enable the "Include chapter number"
option. Click OK to return to the Caption dialog (from where you can insert
captions into your document).
