Numbering captions

I am trying to insert figure captions into a word document. When I go to
Insert>Reference>Caption> My caption number says "Chapter 1 Figure 1." I
don't want my "Figure 1" to be preceded by Chapter 1. I can't figure out
where this chapter 1 is coming from. The "include chapter number" box is
UNCHECKED. My heading styles are based on MS preset headings 1 - 5 etc.
Although, I have fiddled with these quite a bit in trying to get my document
formatted properly so that I can eventually have separate chapters. There
are no chapter headings. My outlining and numbering are all set to none.

When you insert a caption, Word applies the Caption style. The
"Chapter #" part indicates to me that the Caption style has been
modified to include a number format. Display the Modify Style dialog
box (see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/ModifyAStyle.html),
click the Format button, click Numbering. In the Bullets and Numbering
dialog box, choose the "None" option, and then click OK to confirm the
settings in each dialog box.
