Caption out of view with style cented

I want Caption paragaph centered (as in previous templates in Word 97, etc),
but with Word 2003, centering this paragraph also centers the caption field,
so only the first letter is visible on the Insert Caption dialog.

Should I insert caption as Left justified, then redefine the caption(s) for
tables and figures to a centered style (table, figures)...how to build TOC
(that is list of tables, list of tables), then?

Unfortunately, the scenario you describe is what is required (and if you
think centered is bad, try it right-aligned!). You can modify the Caption
style after inserting all your captions.

An old workaround was to insert caption (style defined as left aligned), then
reapply style Table Title (keep with next, ctrd) to table captions and Figure
Title (centered, NOT keep with next) to the figure captions.

I haven't figured out how to automate this would the following pseudo code
work:
From top, go to next table, go up one line, format Table title, next table
to end of doc
....go to top, go to figure (as a style, or is there a figure object) go to
next paragraph, format Figure title, next figure
