Figure/Table captions not fully visible

I'm using Word 2003 in Windows XP.

The template I'm required to use has Figure and Table captions in a
center-justified format. When I insert a caption, the Caption window
has a Caption field in which the word "Table" or "Figure" is way over
to the right, partly beyond the right edge of the field of view. Is
this simply how Word works, or is it an anomaly that shouldn't be (and
what might cause such an anomaly)?

This seems to be slightly extreme but the Caption dialog can pick up not only
centre alignment but indent as well. If you have a large indent (from left)
this could push the text over to the right. This will not affect the function
of the Caption, just press Ok and move on.

I wanted to compose the caption text right in the field while the box
was open, but I'll live if I have to close the box before entering it.

Not sure if this will be duplicated, system glitch.
I have Figure and Table captions as Autotext entries now (much quicker) and
hardly ever use the Insert Reference Caption route. Even when I did (do) I
never type in the dialog box anyway, just press retrun to OK, and continue in
the document.

If you think this is bad, try using a *right-aligned* caption style! I would
say that this is both "simply how Word works" AND "an anomaly that shouldn't
be." I consider it a bug, and I wish the Word team would do something about
it. If you're supposed to be able to compose text in a text field, then that
text field should be left aligned (or at least should scroll) regardless of
the alignment of the resulting text in the document.

I have a question relative to Inserting Captions with Figures and Tables. I
make a new label using Capital Letters for Figures/Tables and including
Chapter numbers and then modify the caption style to reflect the font,
justification etc. It works well while I am in the document but when I save
and exit, and return later on with changes, I have to go back into Insert
Caption and redo the steps all over again. Is there a step I am missing so
that each document will keep the Insert Caption Style for figures and tables.

Caption definitions are stored in the Normal template. It seems as if you
are prevented from saving changes to normal.dot (or normal.dotm if you are
using Word 2007).

I am using Word 2007. How can I save it to the Normal.dotm? Do I go into
the template and make these adjustments?

Well, the key is to figure out *why* you aren't allowed to save changes to
normal.dotm, assuming that is what is happening.

Are you on a company network or are you using a stand-alone computer?

Are you running any add-ins?

I am using a template that we developed in-house. I modified the labels in
the captions to capital letters (ie:FIGURE, TABLE) and saved the template but
the new captions do not appear when I open the document that is attached to
the template. Is there a way to get the modified captions so that they appear
each time I open the document that is attached to the in-house template??

If the document does not have access to the template, then you will not be
able to add new captions with the same label, but existing captions should
not be changed.
