Caption style: problem with alignment

I have my "Caption" style customised with Alignment = Centered, however
whenever I insert a new caption, even though its style is Caption as it
should be, its alignment is Left, and only if I reapply the style to it will
the aligment become Centered. I therefore have to reapply the style manually
every single time I insert a caption. Any help?

I can't reproduce the issue you are describing. If I modify the Caption
style to include center alignment that formatting is preserved as I insert
captions. Note that if you want to change the defaults you'll have to add
the modified style to the attached template as well.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.

I thought that if I modify a style within one document, the style's new
settings will be evident when I apply it to selections. But being that
Captions is a built-in style, things might work a bit differently.

I'm not sure what you mean by attached template - do you mean I have to save
the modified Captions style into Normal.dotm?

Modifications to a style should immediately reflect in existing paragraphs
where that style is applied. If that doesn't happen, direct formatting may
be applied to those paragraphs. You can use Ctrl+Q to clear any direct
formatting (or, as you have noticed, you can reapply the style). This works
the same way for built-in and custom styles.

The attached template is the template listed under "Document template" in
the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box; if you didn't explicitly choose
another template when you created your document, the attached template will
be normal.dotm. The "New documents based on this template" option in the
Modify Style dialog box can be used to transfer a style to the attached
template. Alternatively, you can explicitly copy the style (to any document
or template) by using the Organizer dialog box.

I see what you mean. The new definition of the style had not been linked to
any templates, as it is only in the current document that I want this
particular formatting for captions.

Modifications to a style should immediately reflect in existing paragraphs
where that style is applied. If that doesn't happen, direct formatting may
be applied to those paragraphs.

Indeed it should, but in the case of the Caption style, the alignment
setting seems to be ignored. Interestingly enough, all other format settings
for the style work - for instance, I have set the font under the Caption
style to be italicised, and this *is* reflected when I apply the style, but
the Alignment=Centered setting is not, and the caption stays aligned Left.
Very strange.

Does this error occur when you *insert* a caption via the Caption dialog box
as well?
