When I allow the Windows Update scan my computer, it
shows that there are some Windows XP updates available
and also a driver update (i.e., I can view the short
summary, located in the left protion of the window).
However, when I highlight and click on either of the two
selections, a new tiled window opens that wants to scan
my PC again. I can click within that new window and it
will scan again showing that (again, still)there are some
Windows XP updates available and also a driver update;
but when I highlight and select within the new tiled
window, yet another tiled window appears, ad infinitum.

I'm using XP pro on the PC that's doing this. I have two
other PC's on XP Home edition and they can be updated
just fine. Actually, at one time, the XP Pro PC updated
correctly. It seems after a long period of time, I was no
longer able to access the updates correctly.

Look through the troubleshooting. There is at least one situation there
that sounds like yours..

Try adding Microsoft.com to your trusted Web Content Zone and then set the security
level to default or medium low for the trusted zone. See link below for more details.
You will have to uncheck "require server verification" when adding a site or only
https secure sites will be allowed to be entered. --- Steve
