can't uninstall TCP/IP after installing xp sp2

While trying to renew IP address getting a winsocket error. But I when I try
to uninstall the tcp\ip protocol, the tab box is grayed out. I just noticed
this on every computer with XP pro that has sp2. I'm not really wanting to
remove the sp2 just to be able to uninstall a protocol. I'm still reading and
searching for the answer, but if anyone knows, please help me.
